Star Gazing Program

On December 23, 2024, D. B. S. College, Kanpur, hosted an enriching star-gazing program under the auspices of the esteemed Principal, Prof. Anil Kumar Mishra. The event was organized with the guidance of Prof. R. K. Mishra (HOD, Geography) and Prof. Pragya Agarwal (HOD, Physics). It provided an extraordinary opportunity for over 50 students, faculty members, and local attendees to delve into the mysteries of the night sky. Equipped with a telescope, participants observed celestial marvels like Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, and Venus. Such programs play a pivotal role in fostering curiosity and scientific temper among the general public. Astronomy not only unveils the secrets of the cosmos but also bridges the gap between science and culture, as emphasized by Dr. Anita Nigam, who captivated the audience with fascinating mythological stories linked to stars and planets. Dr. Abhishek Johri further deepened the audience’s understanding by explaining the theoretical aspects of astronomy and ensuring the smooth handling of the telescope, enabling seamless observations.

Astronomers play a crucial role in society by expanding our comprehension of the universe and inspiring future generations to pursue careers in science and technology. They help address fundamental questions about our existence and provide insights into phenomena affecting our planet, such as climate change and asteroid impact predictions. Dr. Gautam Hal highlighted the significance of such outreach activities, emphasizing their role in sparking interest in the STEM fields and encouraging students to think beyond textbooks.

The program had a profound impact on the college students, and local community. Students gained a hands-on experience with astronomical equipment, enhancing their practical knowledge and observational skills. Faculty members, including senior professors like Prof. Indrani Dubey, Media Cell In charge Prof. Sunil Upadhyay, and Chief Proctor Prof. Shailendra Shukla, were present to motivate and guide the students. The presence of distinguished educators such as Dr. Diwali Dwivedi, Dr. Manju Bhaskar, Dr. Tamanna Begam, Dr. Gyan Prakash, Dr. Alok Srivastava, Dr. Renu Singh, Dr. Anita Singh, Dr. Swadesh Gupta, and Mr. Satvant Yadav further elevated the event’s academic significance. The geography department’s supporting staff ensured logistical arrangements, making the event seamless and impactful. This program not only brought astronomical wonders closer to the public but also fostered a sense of unity and intellectual enrichment. Its coverage in local newspapers amplified its reach, inspiring a broader audience to appreciate the importance of science and astronomy in everyday life.

Such initiatives are a testament to the college’s commitment to holistic education and community engagement, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated.
