DEPARTMENTAL PROFILE

Department of Geography is one of the important school of study centre in D.B.S. College, Kanpur, where both U.G. and P.G. more than 800 students engaged in learning the subject of Geography for their future. This Department is established in the year 1960 by Prof. S.K. Awasthi, Founder Head of this Department, after that Dr. K.C.L. Srivastava and Dr. Ranjana Srivastava and presently Dr. R.K. Mishra leading this department for excellence.

Geography is an intellectual discipline with very broad scope and depth. It combines aspects of the social sciences and the natural sciences. It enhances our knowledge of the earth we live in and broadens our view of the social, political and economic aspects of different cultures and societies. In addition, the study of Geography provides students with effective tools such as cartography, Geographic Information Systems and quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze processes that influence the environment. These skills help to prepare students for jobs in the public and private sectors that deal with environmental and social research, planning, development and management activities. So, as we look forward into the 21st Century, the Department of Geography is well placed to address key issues confronting our society. We look forward to play an instrumental role in the efforts of D.B.S. College in fulfilling its vision and mission to be a catalytic hub of all academic extension and activities and overall development of human resource by ensuring uniform quality of higher education by using modern technology.

The vision and mission of the Department of Geography also covers the same objectives and its ultimate motivation is to achieve the goals of human welfare through regional studies and planning. The Faculty members engage the classes as per the time-table. The teaching method involves delivering the lectures by using relevant teaching aids. The black board and white board are being used to convince the subject matter effectively to the students. The OHP has also been used to show important features concerned to the topic while teaching. Apart from all these aids the maps, charts and three dimensional models have been widely used in teaching the subject matter. Teachers apply both traditional as well as modern methods and techniques in teaching. While teaching the students are asked certain questions to test the level of understanding the subject matter. They are also made to solve certain problems on the black board, and classroom discussions are regularly conducted. In case the students still find it difficult to understand they are advised to meet the teachers after the class hours.

From this department more than hundred students qualified and selected in different competitive exam like U.P.S.C., S.S.C., Banking Sectors, School Education and College Educations in the year 2009 and 2016, our P.G. students University Top Scorer in 2019 one of our student Ms. Tara Shukla qualified UP PCS exam., now posted at S.D.M. Etawah. More than our 15 students qualified UGC, NET and JRF.
